Red-fronted Macaw Conservation in Action
Frente Roja Nature Reserve is an important sanctuary for the conservation of Bolivia’s unique wildlife. Protecting this special place is only possible with the support of people like you who understand the value of nature and wild places.
With the support of the Indigenous communities of San Carlos, Perereta, and Amaya, Asociación Armonía established the 50-hectare (124-acre) Frente Roja Nature Reserve in 2006. The reserve protects the world’s largest breeding colony of the Critically Endangered Red-fronted Macaw, a species found only in Bolivia.
This achievement is only the first step toward securing the species’ future while empowering the local Indigenous communities that are essential to its conservation.
Your impact as a Friend of Frente Roja
Just over 1,000 Red-fronted Macaws remain in the wild. The species is threatened by habitat loss, poaching for the illegal pet trade, and persecution by farmers who view the birds as crop pests, particularly in maize and peanut fields. We know that changing attitudes and practices in Bolivia are essential to ending the illegal wildlife trade and reducing persecution of this endangered species.
To improve the situation and engage local communities, we have directly linked nature conservation with better livelihoods and improved quality of life. Empowering the people of Bolivia is at the heart of our mission. By co-managing the reserve with local Indigenous communities, we empower people while demonstrating that protecting nature can also improve lives.
Your support directly protects the Red-fronted Macaw through environmental education campaigns that help eliminate poaching for the illegal wildlife trade, while creating sustainable alternative livelihoods for local and Indigenous communities through initiatives such as beekeeping, crop protection, and other income-generating activities.

Friends of Frente Roja is a community of individuals committed to supporting our conservation efforts. Members receive an annual report, including our financial report and the management budget for the coming year. Friends have also contributed valuable ideas, suggestions, professional contacts, and educational materials that strengthen our work.
To become a Friend of Frente Roja, we invite an annual contribution of US$10,000, with a minimum annual donation of US$2,000.
